Each person can possess different leadership characteristics that can be honed and improved through leadership training. However, every leader has their own way of dealing with various situations.

Identifying leadership styles can help managers match leadership styles and characteristics to particular tasks and responsibilities. Understanding your leadership style (and the rest of your team’s) is crucial to driving positive results. By knowing yourself, you can adjust to different scenarios and determine what leadership style will work for that particular situation.

You are an Authoritarian or Autocratic Leader.

You’re the boss, and you have complete authority and responsibility. You take full control and make decisions alone, even without the input of your team members. You set the goals and dictate policies, procedures, and workflow. You fully expect your subordinates to follow them to the letter, without question or hesitance. When an employee challenges you, all you need to do is raise an eyebrow to get them to quiet down and do what they’re told. They already know that disciplinary action may ensue should they choose to disobey. This leadership style is commonly used in limited environments such as the military, factories, and sports. Some of the famous autocratic leaders in history are Adolf Hitler, Queen Elizabeth I, Kim Jong Un, and Vladimir Putin. You’d be surprised that some regard Martha Stewart and Donald Trump to be autocratic leaders as well.
You are a Transformational Leader.

Your main goal as a transformational leader is to bring change in your team members and organization. You motivate your team to do more than they should and achieve more than they thought they ever could. You set challenging expectations to achieve the highest possible results. You believe in empowering your followers and providing them a true sense of purpose to have more committed and engaged team members. The words “inspire,” “challenge,” and “motivate” are common in your vocabulary. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are two of the most famous transformational leaders.
You are a Transactional Leader.

As a transactional leader, you focus on increasing efficiency and improving productivity. You like making sure that your team is a well-oiled machine that always functions in its optimum state by providing your employees a clear structure to achieve the set objectives. You’re a great dealmaker, and you thrive on negotiations. You reward great performance with immediate and tangible rewards and implement corrective action when your team members don’t meet expectations. You believe in quotas, numbers, and results. Examples of noteworthy transactional leaders include Starbucks founder, Howard Schultz, Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.
You are a Bureaucratic Leader.

You follow the rules to the letter and work by the book. As such, you make sure that your followers and team members do the same. You do things precisely as indicated in the book to maintain safety, accuracy, and quality of work. If standard procedures aren’t followed, you fear that repercussions will be great. There’s a reason that a strict procedure was put in place, after all. You believe in a strict hierarchy of roles, and that people should stick to their own assigned responsibilities. This style of leadership is common in health care, military, and other organizations that have strict safety protocol.
You are a Charismatic Leader.

As a very eloquent and savvy talker, you can be very charming. This is how you get people to follow you. You are skilled at communicating your vision and connecting with people on a deeper, more emotional level. Because you’re very articulate, you can arouse strong emotions in people and compel them to take action. Your people highly admire you because you show them that you’re concerned about their welfare and needs. It’s important for you to include your team members in decision-making. People are comfortable around you, and you believe that a friendly atmosphere can foster better productivity and increase employee engagement. Famous charismatic leaders include Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr., although some would argue that Adolf Hitler is also a charismatic leader.
You are a Democratic Leader.

You have the final say, but you delegate power and decision making to your team members while guiding and supervising them. All decisions must be made for the greater good of the organization, so you keep communication lines open. Everyone is involved in decision making, and each member of the team is encouraged to contribute through their own specialty and expertise. You believe in upholding fairness, competence, creativity, courage, intelligence, and honesty in your team. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Google co-founder and CEO, Larry Page, and Coca-Cola CEO, Muhtar Kent are great examples of democratic leaders.
You are a Laissez-Faire Leader.

As a Laissez-Faire leader, you give your team members all the right and power to make decisions. It’s a completely democratic style wherein you delegate tasks to your followers with little to no supervision. They are free to work however they please as long as they are successful in delivering the desired results. You don’t believe in controlling or micromanaging your team members, so you give them full rein of their work. This is commonly done with remote workers and skilled freelancers. The downside to Laissez-Faire is that very little feedback is given to team members. Queen Victoria is one of the most famous Laissez-Faire leaders who successfully utilized this style of leadership to build one of the world’s richest and strongest countries. The Victorian Period is known as the “age of individualism” where workers used their own skills and talents, and the Queen stayed out of their business unless it was necessary for her to intervene.
You are a Servant Leader.

You lead people by being an exemplary and upstanding team player. You believe that great leadership starts by putting the needs of your followers first. You don’t really care about formal recognition, and you’re content leading from behind. You care about ethics, integrity, and moral authority rather than being in the limelight. You may be quiet and shy at times, but you often have the simplest and brightest ideas in the room. With a genuine desire to serve people, you often bring about compassion and empathy in people. Because of your impact as a servant leader, the people you serve grow as individuals and become wiser and more independent. You are a rare breed! Famous servant leaders throughout history include Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Princess Diana of Wales.
